M*A*S*H - Season 7
Genre: Comedies Release Date: 06/02/2009 Rating UR Production Year: 1979 Cast: Alan Alda, Jamie Farr, David Ogden Stiers One of the most popular and innovative television series in history, M*A*S*H aired for a record eleven years, and its finale episode attracted a larger number of viewers than any other single episode before or since. Based on Robert Altman's feature film of the same name, and set during the Korean War, the show was initially conceived as a critique on the Vietnam War, but eventually adopted a more character-driven, rather than situation- or issue-driven, plot. With a large ensemble cast, a few main players were in evidence, including "Hawkeye" Pierce (Alan Alda) and his buddy John McIntyre, two top-notch doctors more interested in booze and women than operating. Dr. Frank Burns (Larry Linville) and the Senior Nurse, Lieutenant Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan (Loretta Swit) were the two staunch military enforcers who were forever trying to get the two "playboys" court martialed. Ltd. Col. Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson) was the ostensible camp commander, but the place was really run by Corporal Walter "Radar" O'Reilly (Gary Burghoff), who had superhuman hearing and knew what Blake was thinking before Blake did himself. Max Klinger (Jamie Farr) was the corporal constantly in pursuit of a section 8 discharge, and Father Francis Mulcahy (William Christopher) was the kindly local priest. Season 7 includes the episodes: "Commander Pierce, "Peace On Us," "Our Finest Hour," "None Like it Hot," "Major Ego," "Baby, it's Cold Outside," "Dear Comrade," "The Young And The Restless," "Hot Lips is Back in Town," "Rally Round the Flagg, Boys," "Ain't Love Grand," "The Party," and many others. … more less -

Number 23, The
Genre: Dramas Release Date: 07/24/2007 Rating UR Production Year: 2007 Cast: Jim Carrey, Virginia Madsen, Logan Lerman, Danny Huston, Lynn Collins In Joel Schumacher's psychological thriller THE NUMBER 23, Jim Carrey takes on another dramatic role. Carrey's character is similar to his roles in THE TRUMAN SHOW and ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND: he portrays an average man thrust into quite extraordinary situations after a series of strange events cause him to question everything he's ever taken for granted. On his birthday, Walter Sparrow is given a mysterious and tattered book called THE NUMBER 23 by his loving wife, Agatha (Virginia Madsen). As Walter reads the book, he quickly notices its alarming similarities to his own life. Rather than stop reading, he continues, unknowingly inviting the book to take over his life. The deeper Walter gets into the plot, the more he sees himself in its protagonist, Fingerling, whom we see through highly stylized sequences in which Carrey appears as the seedy detective character. Madsen is also present in these scenes, cast as Fingerling's pain-loving girlfriend Fabrizia. As Fingerling and Fabrizia's love affair inches towards its fiery conclusion, we learn the role the number 23 has played in their story and will play in Walter's future if he cannot keep his growing obsession with it at bay. While Carrey and Madsen are adept at playing a man gone mad and a headstrong wife in crisis, they are most fascinating as their dark counterparts, and Schumacher succeeds in creating a truly intoxicating noirish underworld of sex and death through those sequences. … more less -
Last House on the Left, The
Genre: Horror Release Date: 08/18/2009 Rating UR Production Year: 2009 Run Time: 110 mins Released By: Universal Studios Home Video Cast: Tony Goldwyn, Monica Potter, Sara Paxton, Garret Dillahunt, Martha MacIsaac Based on Wes Craven's landmark 1972 exploitation flick of the same name, LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT is a brutal movie that exposes the darkest recesses of human depravity. The simple plot follows four criminals on the lam who encounter a pair of nubile female teens in a small mountain town. After murdering one and brutally raping the other and leaving her for dead, the cons seek refuge at a nearby summer house. The twist is that it's the very home inhabited by the parents of one of the victims. Upon learning that their house guests raped and tortured their 17-year-old daughter, the couple exact a revenge that arguably exceeds the excesses of the sociopathic gang. When originally released in 1972, LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT was a shock to the system. Never before had a film shown such images of human wickedness. Grainy and low budget, the original film played like a maniacal cackle from the seedy underbelly of an America nursing a brutal post-Aquarian hangover. Things play out a little differently, though, in 2009. For starters, the movie actually looks quite beautiful, and the story¿s idyllic mountain setting is milked for all it's worth. The performances are noteworthy as well, with Garret Dillahunt more than convincing as Krug, the gang's swaggering leader; and Monica Potter and Tony Goldwyn portraying the distressed parents with an effective mix of panic, courage, and blind instinct. In an age marked by both increasingly ghastly films and a public discourse that actually debates the merits of institutional torture, a film like LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT really shouldn¿t shock anyone. But in both the original and the remake, there¿s a latent nihilism that permeates the world. The idea of a sense of lawlessness that cannot be understood or prevented, but only reacted against, is truly disquieting and makes this story unique in the annals of horror. … more less -

Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning
Genre: Horror Release Date: 09/07/2004 Rating UR Production Year: 2004 Run Time: 94 mins Released By: Lions Gate Home Entertainment Cast: Emily Perkins, Katherine Isabelle The Fitzgerald sisters are back in the third installment of the wonderfully horrific Canadian werewolf series, and this time they've travelled back in time, manifest in one of their previous incarnations. Orphans traveling across the Canadian wilderness by horseback during the 19th Century, the girls encounter a crumbling Indian campsite where the one remaining inhabitant issues a strange prophetic warning, the first of many mysterious encounters to come. When the sisters take refuge at a trading fort populated only by men, they soon learn of the monstrous beasts in the outlying land that menace the men both physically and mentally, as many seem to be moving towards madness and all seem to have something to hide. When Ginger is bitten by a little boy and starts slowly changing, the sisters realize they must work to solve the prophecy before its too late. This film, providing a backstory for characters introduced in the first two films of the series, offers stunning cinematography by Michael Marshall, known for his work with gifted Canadian director Guy Maddin, and superb performances by all the actors, including many respected indie stars. The series has been a cult favorite since the first GINGER SNAPS in 2000, and this film is more than just another werewolf horror flick; it has a little of everything: fantastic gore and great action with a challenging script that has real emotion, all depicted with a beautifully Gothic aesthetic. … more less -

Dead End
Genre: Horror Release Date: 11/19/2004 Rating UR Production Year: 2004 Run Time: 87 mins Released By: Lions Gate Home Entertainment Cast: Ray Wise, Alexandra Holden, Lin Shaye This thriller is a heady, suspenseful brew that mixes dark comedy with scare tactics, resulting in a tense buildup and a complexity that belies the apparent simplicity of the plot. Ray Wise plays Frank Harrington, the sharp-witted patriarch of a family that's having difficulties getting along during the holiday season. Driving to Christmas dinner at the in-laws, his passengers include his wife, his psych-student daughter, her unhinged boyfriend Brad, and her teenaged, gothed-out brother. The trouble begins when Frank falls asleep at the wheel, nearly killing everyone; a foreboding sign of what's to come. Soon after realizing that his shortcut has resulted in getting the travellers hopelessly lost, Frank picks up a beautiful, mute lady in white, hitchhiking with a little bundle that appears to be a baby. Things soon turn deadly, and the family embarks on a panic-stricken quest to escape the nightmare they have stumbled into, while their bickering maintains its constancy. Though the special effects are superbly done and the simple scenario is carried along by an impressive buildup, in the end it is the superbly acted characters who carry this film. Along with Wise, ALLY MCBEAL's Alexandra Holden, Amber Smith, (AMERICAN BEAUTY) and Farrely brothers veteran Lin Shay all turn in stellar performances. … more less -
